Occupy’ Congressional Candidate Campaigns from Streets with Hip-Hop Video

WILLIAMSBURG — His congressional campaign may have little money, but self-proclaimed “Occupy candidate” George Martinez boasts passion, popular appeal, activist experience — and hip-hop skills.

“I challenge any other candidate to a battle,” a smiling Martinez said in Williamsburg Wednesday, on a break from his campaign as a candidate for New York’s newly drawn 7th U.S. Congressional District.

“Yes, a rap battle.”

Martinez — who is running against longtime Rep. Nydia Velazquez on the Democratic primary ballot in June, along with City Councilman Erik Martin Dilan and first-time candidate Dan O’Connor — unveiled his latest campaign tactic this week: a music video called “Occupy 2.0 All Streets, Bum Rush the Vote.”

The video, shot during Occupy Wall Street’s May Day protests, features the 38-year-old Brooklyn native rapping in a suit on the subway and on the street with demonstrators.

“You can’t kill an idea,” said Martinez about the OWS movement, which led him earlier to record a “hip-hop anthem” with his wife in the fall that has drawn nearly 25,000 views on YouTube.

“My goal is to empower a movement of people that will take this action and use it to take over New York City in the next year.”

That means Martinez — former District Leader for the 51st Assembly District and an adjunct professor in political science at Pace University — also wants an Occupy-inspired mayor, City Council and Congress.

He even named his campaign “Bum Rush the Vote” to signify the people-led movement.

Brothers and Sisters,

There are three major segments to each election cycle. Each segment presents it’s own opportunity to learn, appreciate challenges and overcome the impossible. You are receiving this e-mail because you volunteered with us in the past or because you’ve expressed interest in volunteering with us. We are in our Campaign stretch. The Primary IS the election. #J26OccupyNY7

	1) Petitioning Process – 938 validated signatures of Dems in the District + safety numbers to beat challenges.
DONE – we turned in close to 3,000 signatures and none were invalidated.
2) Campaign/Field Operation – About 40,000 likely voters for the Democratic Primary/About 40 days to Knock for the 99%
That works out to an avg of 40 knocks a day for 25 volunteers.
We KNOW we can do this, it means volunteers are going to have to stand and deliver. Our plan is to focus on M-F
canvassing from 6-9pm and throw in some weekend work between events.
3) Get Out The Vote/GOTV – We’re in the process of developing an innovative game plan to make this happen – many
surprises in store and we are going to have a blast – #J26OccupyNY7. Bum Rush The Vote

This is where the rubber meets the road in terms of real organizing. Movement building happens in the streets talking to people face to face.

All Day All Week Tabling in the District 9am-Noon
Monday: Sunset Park Brooklyn: 45th and 4th Avenue
Tuesday: Woodhaven Queens: Jamaica Ave and 85th Street
Wednesday: Park Slope Brooklyn: 9th Street and 5th Avenue
Thursday: Williamsburg Brooklyn: Graham Ave and Siegel St
Friday: Bushwick Brooklyn: Wyckoff Ave and Dekalb Ave

Canvassing in the District 6-9pm
Check in with me (Timothy – 718-208-8425 voice/text) as per your availability, there will be fluid changes in this schedule particularly with regard to locations.

This Weekend’s Events 10am Saturday – from here we may be shifting to a community clean-up and or a stop the violence rally.
Saturday: Williamsburg Brooklyn: Graham Ave and Siegel St – Community Intake
(If you know of any events that you think we should be at, particularly if they are in the district, we’d love to hear about them.)

Thanks,

Timothy
718-208-8425 (mobile)

P.S. Hope to see you in Williamsburg in the morning.

Bum Rush The Vote is real and our model candidate (George Martinez – The ONLY Occupy Activist on a Primary Ballot – straight out of OWS) has beaten back the petition challenges to get on the ballot for June 26th Democratic Primary…we are the 99% and it’s time to Occupy a seat in Congress. #J26OccupyNY7

We’re at a critical stage in our campaign to take back the seats of our elected officials on behalf of the people, the 99%. At this stage what we need most is your help fighting the corporate political machines. We won’t take corporate money, but we do need grassroots financial support – it’s up to you to help us occupy this seat. Wer’re relying on a viral crowd sourced campaign and we need YOU to make our movement and funding become a viral cause. Together we will Bum Rush The Vote!!!

General objections were filed against us last week, but it looks like they are not going to be initiating a ballot challenge as specifications were not filed by the deadline. We found out on May Day that we are on the ballot! Seems like they heard us loud and clear, that we were not going to tolerate any sort of voter suppression money game.

In our efforts to get money out of politics, unfortunately we still have to raise money. Please contribute to our Act Blue page. We are committed to not taking any corporate money in this election. That means we need many small donations. Our opponent’s money has hardly come from small donors at all. It mainly comes from Washington, PAC’s and the Banks. This is what separates us.

If you truly believe in getting money out of politics, we are on the front lines. As yet, we cannot get money out of politics, but we CAN get corporate money out of politics, but only if the people who say they care about it, prove that with actual support and real resources.

As you can see in the video above, we were out petitioning yesterday and today. We have close to three-hundred signatures already and it’s only the second day of petitioning!

How to register to vote in New York

New York Board of Elections voter registration form page

You can register to vote online. If you want to carry petitions with us, please print out the form, fill it out and put it in the mail today, then you can carry petitions with us any time after that. If you don’t have a printer you can pick one up at any post office. Petitions can only be carried by New York State Democrats.

If you want to petition, you must pick up the petition in person. But once you have come in person and received instructions, you can take petitions with you to get your friends to sign them. You should also register your friends to vote and have them sign the petition. You can register to vote and sign a petition on the same day.

We are creating an organic movement here, and the web of personal relationships is the most important aspect of what we are doing. We want to be part of a community. With 100 people gathering ten sinatures a piece from their friends, we would have the required number of signatures that we need. It is possible for one person to collect 44 in two hours on a train platform in the morning at Rush Hour. You choose your own level of involvement. We need 5000 signatures.

Video instructions on how to fill out a petition

First the signer prints their name on the top line where it says name. Then they put their signature underneath. Their address goes in the big box on the right, don’t forget the zip code. On the right end, put the county or city of the signer. Brooklyn is Kings County, and Manhattan is New York County. Date it.

It is important to have all the information for a single signature in only one color ink, because discrepancies can cause the signature to be knocked off of the ballot. A good rule of thumb for this is only allow signers to sign in one kind of pen. Bring several with you. You should also have a legal size clipboard.

Do not sign the Witness Statement until you return the petitions to the campaign.
